The Rowan berry comes from the Mountain Ash also known as the Witch wood, used for centuries as an amulet against witchcraft and enchantment.

The physical characteristics of the tree may have contributed to its protective reputation. Each berry has a tiny five pointed star or pentagram opposite its stalk.
